General technical standards of Vietnamese durian:

  • Intact, hard crown, with or without stem;
  • Not rotten or damaged to the point of being unusable; clean, no foreign matter visible to the naked eye;
  • No harmful organisms affecting the appearance of the product;
  • Not damaged by harmful organisms;
  • No abnormal moisture on the outside of the shell, unless there is condensation due to having just been removed from cold storage;
  • No strange smell or taste;
  • Hard;
  • Not damaged by low or high temperature;
  • When ripe, the fruit flesh must not have abnormalities such as: rough fruit flesh, skin spots or watery pulp. If there is one or more damages, the total damage must not exceed 5% of the edible percentage of the fruit.
  • Fresh durian fruit must have reached the appropriate stage of development and maturity, corresponding to the characteristics of the commercial variety or type and the growing area. The fruit must be able to ripen after harvest with acceptable quality;
  • The level of development and condition of the fresh durian fruit must be ensured;
  • Withstand transportation and handling;
  • Be in good condition upon arrival;

The grades are as follows:

  • Type “Special” durian:
    • Purity 90% min
    • Quality class 1: 10% max
    • Highest quality, each fruit must have at least 4 segments;
    • Fully developed thorns and no cracks at the base;
    • Fruits without defects, except for some very small defects on the fruit shell that do not affect the appearance or quality;
  • Type Durian Class I:
    • Purity 90% min
    • Quality class 2: 10% max
    • Good quality;
    • Each fruit must have at least 3 compartments;
    • Fully developed thorns and no cracks at the base;
    • Small defects on the shell are allowed, as long as they do not affect the appearance or quality.
  • Type Durian Class II:
    • Purity 90% min
    • Quality under class 2: 10% max (does not meet the requirements of class II nor the minimum requirements, but does not have rotten fruit or any other damage that makes it unsuitable for use).
    • Each fruit must have at least 2 segments;
    • There may be very small defects on the shell but not affecting the flesh of the fruit.
